The infinity pleasure of Tea and the art of a Tearist

Afternoon tea in our Authors’ Lounge is more than a tradition, it’s also a culinary learning experience. Our very own “Tearista” Khun Asia shares his expertise with guests – suggesting new varieties to try and advising on perfect pairings for sandwiches, scones and sweets.

Tea, a product of ancient, noble civilizations, is the subject of many charming legends. It is considered the most ancient infusion in the world and is praised for its medicinal virtues, which, it is said, cultivate the mind and heal the soul. It was only in the 17th century that tea truly began its remarkable expansion into the Western hemisphere spearheaded by the various East India Companies.

Traditional English afternoon tea is about socializing and enjoying time relaxing with the warmth of tea in the company of loved ones. Civilised manners are part of the authentic afternoon tea experience. It is traditionally served at low tables or couches, including a selection of cakes, quality loose tea, scones and elegant sandwiches served on a tiered stand. Etiquette dictates that the person nearest the pot should serve everyone; however at the Authors’ Lounge, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s iconic afternoon tea venue, located in the Authors' Wing, our “Tearista” Khun Asia has recreated the fine art of serving tea.

The historic Authors’ Lounge is located in the oldest part of the hotel which dates back to the 1800’s and exudes Colonial charm via white-washed rattan furniture, Siamese umbrellas, graceful bamboo and lush palm trees. The lavish afternoon tea menu offers upwards of 15 different teas, from our own historic Oriental Blend to the luxurious Mariage Frères teas, which are sourced from the most select tea gardens across the globe. With such a wide variety of teas, it seemed a shame for each guest to enjoy only one selection. Thus, tea expert Khun Asia provides a delightful extra dimension to your afternoon tea experience: he introduces alternate tastings that pair perfectly with the accompanying pastries, sandwiches and other afternoon tea treats.

The attentive level of service offered by Khun Asia is typical of the Tea Salon ethos; however, the experience becomes legendary thanks to “The Oriental touch”. Our Tearista ensures that the tea is brewed perfectly and recommends that tea enthusiasts make the most of the extensive choice of Mariage Frères Tea’s by indulging in more than one blend. “It adds depth to the afternoon tea experience to change tea at some point in the meal,” he explains; “a strong blend such as the Marco Polo is ideal for the sandwiches and scones, but then I recommend something lighter and more refreshing such as French Breakfast to accompany the cakes and signature macaroons.”
